We recently completed a 60-page summary of research documents,
entitled ARTS & CULTURE IN THE SACRAMENTO REGION:
A SUMMARY OF RESEARCH AND PLANNING DOCUMENTS, 1990-2010.
Included are local studies done on the arts, economic impact of the arts, arts
marketing as well as related and significant national research.

Ultimately, we will use this document to create a Master Arts Plan for
Sacramento. The Compilation has been utilized by Mayor Johnson’s For Arts Sake
initiative. It is my hope that it will serve as a helpful reference to others
in the arts community, so that we all have access to the necessary information
as we plan new initiatives. To review the Summary, please log onto
www.sacmetroarts.org.

And when you log onto the SMAC web site, please take a moment to enjoy the new
and improved look! We hope you will find the site easier to use. I would like
to mention that our events web site, sacramento365, which went live just 17
months ago, already boasts 3,855,732 hits in February 2010, compared with about
1,000 hits in its first month in October 2008. The site was also recently
honored by the Sacramento Area Museums at their annual reception for assisting
in the ongoing marketing of local museums. To learn more about this dynamic
marketing tool for the arts, please log onto www.sacramento365.com. When you
are on these websites, please click through to our Facebook and Twitter pages.
We face many financial challenges for fiscal year 2011, beginning this July 1st.
Our commissioners are developing a strategy, outlined below in our Chair’s
message, which will help quantify the importance of the arts in Sacramento.
Please help us show the ripple effect of the arts throughout our entire
community, especially outreach to youth and clients of social service organizations.

In closing, I would also like to direct your attention to the APP Gallery
listings at the end of the newsletter. There you will find out about the opening
of on our new exhibit, entitled In Public: Designing Art for the Sacramento
International Airport. The exhibit tracks the review and design process of 10
artists’ proposals commissioned for the new terminal. This is an extremely
exciting public art project and I hope the exhibit will be a beneficial
‘preview’ of the art to come.

We have a story to tell in the arts; a story of creativity, community support,
and commerce. The importance of telling our collective story is now more
relevant than ever and SMAC would like to bring this story to our elected
officials as they wrestle with difficult funding decisions in the near future.

In the months of April and May, SMAC will meet with our elected officials to
show them how the arts support our communities. We will accomplish this by
presenting data which shows a clear correlation between the arts and our
communities.

Keeping our voice heard is key to long term stability and support.

Here’s how you can help! Please send us your anecdotes and stories about what
the SMAC grant has meant to you, the impact your program has made in the lives
of real people- especially youth and the underrepresented, what kind of ripple
effect is created by the arts from your perspective. Please send to
lnorman@cityofsacramento.org a paragraph or two to show the power of the arts by
the end of March.

Thank you for your continuing support in these challenging times.

SMAC Highlight--New Model Arts Program Launched at Edward Kemble Elementary School

Image Two
SMAC has just launched its third Model Arts School Program at Edward Kemble
Elementary School. This program will provide students 24 sessions of theatre
and dance developed and taught by teaching artists. The twelve K-3rd grade
classrooms targeted for the dance and theatre classes are designated by the
School District’s Culturally Responsive Pedagogy Initiative as model classrooms.
This program will explore and model for other teachers in the District how an
arts curriculum, developed in collaboration with classroom teachers, can meet
state performing arts standards while supporting the school’s culturally
responsive education initiative and other learning objects across the
curriculum. Artists will also provide professional development for classroom
teachers in theatre and dance.

The artists were selected for this program from SMAC’s Pre-Qualified Teaching
Artist Pool and are Nathan Jones, dance; Franchesca Sonoyama, theatre; and Gail
Dartez, theatre. The project is funded by a grant from the California Arts
Council, CA Dept. of Education Arts Block Funds from Kemble School and SMAC Arts
Education funds.
