COMMITTEES OF SMAC

The six advisory Committees of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission are comprised of volunteers from the community. The Program Committees were formed to gather the widest possible expertise, community participation and input for the work of the Commission and its professional staff.

Committees generally meet about two hours per month or as needed. Per the "Brown Act”, all meetings of the commission and its committees are open to the Public.

Committees meet at several locations in Sacramento:
Coloma Community Center, 4623 T Street
SMAC office, Conference Room, 2030 Del Paso Blvd.
E. M. Hart Senior Center, 915 27th Street

Arts Education Committee Read more (expand text)

The Arts Education Committee is an advisory body charged with advocating for and supporting experiences that promote lifelong learning in the arts and are reflective of the diverse cultural heritage of the region. The Committee meets monthly to share new trends in arts education, review arts education granting programs, advise Commission staff on technical assistance and training support for artists, and explore potential sources for funding. Grants and Cultural Programs Committee Read more (expand text)

The Grants and Cultural Programs Committee advises staff on SMAC grants and stabilization programs and gives input on cultural programs including cultural tourism, arts marketing and the poet laureate program. The Committee advises staff on current and on-going grants and stabilization programs as well as development of new opportunities. The Committee serves in the capacity of review panel for some grants and other opportunities, making recommendations to staff and to the Commission. Meetings are in the evening, typically on the last Monday of the month.  (Collapse text)

Poet Laureate Sub-Committee Read more (expand text)

The Poet Laureate Committee is a sub-committee of the Grants and Cultural Programs Committee. It serves as an advisory team that supports, encourages and preserves our community’s rich literary and poetry environment with respect to its diverse cultural heritage. The Committee advises, plans and implements the Poet Laureate’s proposed programs and projects. Committee members are actively involved in all planning and implementation stages of the project(s). The Poet Laureate in concert with the committee and staff approves committee members.  The Committee typically meets in the evening on the third Wednesday of the month. Art in Public Places Committee Read more (expand text)

The Art in Public Places program provides opportunities for artists to collaborate with architects, landscape architects, engineers, and community groups to improve the aesthetic quality of public construction projects and enhance the built and natural environment of the region. The Art in Public Places Committee advises staff on the selection of artists and artwork for public construction projects, and reviews policies and procedures for the Art in Public Places program. Periodically, Committee members are asked serve on artist and proposal public review panels. The Committee meets on the second Wednesday of the month. (Collapse text)

Visual Arts Committee Read more (expand text)

The Visual Arts Committee serves as an advisory group to the Gallery Consultant for the selection and recommendation of exhibitions for temporary art exhibitions through the Gallery Program. Exhibitions may be organized from any discipline within the visual arts realm including painting, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, mixed media, printmaking, photography, video, film making, and electronic media. Members of the Committee include local and regional artists, community members, arts administrators, curators, and client representatives from each of the gallery venues.
 The Committee meets periodically throughout the year to make recommendations to the Gallery Consultant, staff, and the Arts Commission. Committee typically meets during the noon hour on the third Wednesday of the month. (Collapse text)

Docent Sub-Committee Read more (expand text)

The Public Art Docent Sub-Committee supports and advises the public art docent coordinator regarding the art docent program in the Art in Public Places Division. The docents provide tours to schools and community groups of the public artwork in the City/County Art in Public Places Collection. The committee includes representatives from the APP Committee, the volunteer art docents, and from the general public. The committee reviews current scheduling and touring procedures and training and educational opportunities for the art docents and other interested parties. The committee meets on the last Wednesday of the month. (Collapse text)
